Thirty One

A game I learned from some Austrians. Game will include a 36 card deck as well as 30 coins in a small box.

Objective:

Each player begins with 3 coins. Losing a round results in losing a coin, and if a player loses all 3 coins, they're eliminated. The last player retaining coins is the winner.

Setup:

Players take turns shuffling. The shuffler can choose either the top 3 cards as their hand or place them in the center. They distribute 3 cards to each player and put 3 in the center.

Actions:

First player is the player clockwise to the shuffler. Player turn continues clockwise. Each player takes one action on their turn.
  1. Trade Hands: Exchange your 3 cards with those in the center.
  2. Trade One Card: Swap one of your cards with a card in the center.
  3. Skip: Declare "Skip" to trade no cards.
  4. Stop: Announce "Stop"; all other players get one more turn. After this, players reveal their cards, and the one with the lowest total loses a coin.

Card Points:

  • 6: 6
  • 7: 7
  • 8: 8
  • 9: 9
  • 10: 10
  • Jack, Queen, King: 10
  • Ace: 11

Points accumulate within a single suit. For instance, if you have a Jack and King in one suit and an Ace in another, only the Jack and King contribute.

A set of 3 of a kind equals 30.5 points (e.g., 3 Sevens).

Instantly lay down your hand if it totals 31 points, prompting all players to reveal.

Other Rules:

  • Every player must Trade One Card for their first action.
  • If the center has 3 cards of the same suit, players must trade their hand for them.
  • If multiple players have less than 20 points during the reveal, they all lose a coin.
